Tab completion as your primary navigation tool

Stop Typing Full Names

Here's a secret that will save you more time than anything else in this course:

Press Tab to autocomplete.

Start typing a file or folder name, press Tab, and Terminal finishes it for you.

Try It Right Now

1

Go to your home folder:

cd ~
2

Type just the first few letters of "Documents":

cd Doc

Don't press Enter yet!

3

Press Tab

Terminal completes it to cd Documents

When There Are Multiple Matches

If multiple files start with the same letters, Tab will complete as much as it can. Press Tab twice quickly to see all options.

For example, if you have "Documents" and "Downloads":

  • Type cd Do and press Tab — nothing happens (both match)
  • Press Tab again — Terminal shows both options
  • Type one more letter (cd Doc or cd Dow) and Tab again

Key Takeaway

Tab is your best friend. Type a few letters, press Tab, and let Terminal do the rest. Use this constantly.
